A proposal for the establishment of a Digital Art-ScienTech Lab based on Web 3.0

Jan. 12, 2022 - Hong Kong

Before the New Year 2022, GOSS Research provided to the School of Creative Media – City University of Hong Kong a proposal for the establishment of a Lab of Digital Art-Science. This proposal raises the question of whether creative media belongs to the technology industry in the area of research and application? In other words, what is the relationship between creative media and modern science and technology? Historical analysis confirms that academic research and application development in the science and technology fields in Hong Kong has always lagged behind the mainland advancements.

Therefore, the proposal points out, the connotation and extension of creative concepts have already shifted away from the traditional pure art paradigm. Creative media industry has integrated into various disciplines and aspects of our daily lives, where creativity becomes the indispensable element for the development of modern society. As the application and development of blockchain technology leading people into the era of the metaverse, it raise questions about what role should creative media play with the change of time? Would it dance to the tune of science technology in the metaverse, or should it adhere to its traditional theoretical paradigm? The social and cognitive progress strongly urges creative media to take part in the development of academic theories and research, particularly in the Hi-Tech application to change the traditional creative approach.

The proposal puts forward four suggestions:

Firstly, the establishment of a Digital Art-Science-Tech Lab to promote the advancement of academic research and science and technology practice, so that to achieve an integration between creativity and technology.

Secondly, the organization of annual activities of digital arts and an annual NFT Creative Media Global Forum in Hong Kong. Thirdly, the integration and embedment of creative media into a new lifestyle, leading to a new view on art.

Fourthly, the formulation of a strategy and outline of academic research and major research topics based on the era of Web.3.0.
